4 Videos to Change What You Feel is Possible in the World Today
Even if it’s Friday, sometimes you wake up on the wrong side of the bed…
That was me today. Thank God I’m not still the grump I woke up this morning. In the spirit of “Casual Friday,” no big sermon on personal or spiritual development today…just some things for you to sit back, watch, enjoy. Today I’ve made happiness and goodness readily available to you, no journaling or deep thinking required:
Here are three four videos I watched with my morning coffee that changed what I feel is possible in the world today. It’s the fine-art of goofy goodness. I hope you enjoy them too. Bookmark this page and come back when you need a pick me up.
900 People Sing “Hey Soul Sister”
This video was created by 900 students from the Universitat de Vic (UVIC), a university in Spain. I think it was done as a promotional video to get students interested in their school. It worked for me. I started to think, “What could I get another degree in?” I want to go to school in Spain and have 900 cool Spanish friends to break out in song and dance with. It’s like a fantasy of mine. You too? (The making of the video is also charming to watch).
Inspired by Iceland
…And now I also want to go to Iceland (how beautiful does it look?) Just in case you were wondering “the volcano has been turned off“. At least that’s what is says in the info section of this YouTube video
Man, there are awesome people everywhere; people having fun, people singing and dancing, couples skinny dipping and kids break dancing. Feeling any better yet? I am. Now, get ready for people hugging.
Free Hugs
This video is what inspired the Free Hugs Campaign. The campaign was started by an Australia man whose mission it was to “reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives.” He goes by the pseudonym “Juan Mann”. The tagline for the Free Hugs campaign is “Sometimes, a hug is all what we need.” (very true). The video and it’s response to the lack of human contact in our age of social connectivity caught Oprah’s eye too. It makes you think: Dang! Juan Mann’s right: Facebook and Twitter still can’t hug me back. No wonder why I’m still lonely even though I’ve got wi-fi.
Where the Hell is Matt?
This video is from 2008, but I can’t get enough of it and it still hasn’t stopped making me smile. The guy who made the video, Matt, traveled to 42 countries and got thousands of folks to dance with him. If 2010 he comes to Kentucky, you know we will dance his funny little jig with him too. (On a side note, Matt seems like I guy I could be friends with because 1). We both agree: Americans need to travel abroad more, and 2). We don’t mind working, but neither of us care for having to show up at the same cubicle every day). I love the message in this video: Goofy dance transcends everything– borders, cultures, colors, differences. Goofy dance connects us all. If you got a body, move it! Before long others will be moving along with you and your day will have gotten a little better. Here is another video on the power of one man starting a whole dance party.

I want my own personal list of inspiration and happiness-inducing videos on the internet to grow, because Lord knows some days I need a reminder of the good and the goofy in the world. Thanks for sharing your links!
BONUS Video
P.S. I got one more for you because I love musicals:
Don’t Stop Believing, Glee
(I’m singing Rachel’s part at the top of my lungs right now as I type this, and I feel awesome). Whether you are a fan of Glee or not, you got love fact that these teenagers actually get to live their life as if it was a musical and we get to sing along with them, cathartically. This song, in particular by Journey , deserves a spot on every motivational playlist– It’s about a love story of impossible odds, and keeping the dream alive. When I’m feeling down, what works for me is taking a 5 min time out from my day to pretend I’m in Glee Club. What works for you?
