On Sunday I leave for Arizona to usher in a small but significant dream.
I’ll spend a week with a community that inspires me and soak in everything I can about alignment and anatomy. I’ll also do a lot of marveling and meditating on the wonders of the body and breath. Provided I study well and give it all my heart, I will come home a Registered Holy Yoga Instructor.
I didn’t always dream of being a yoga instructor. A few years ago, though, I began to feel the desire to go deeper into my own yoga practice. Yoga has been a part of my life for 15 years, and my master’s degree is in Eastern Philosophy. My husband and I also share a deep faith in Christ and we lead a missional community in our neighborhood.
Even in the progressive city of Portland, Or, where we live, there aren’t a lot of “Christian Yogis”, and some would say that title is an oxymoron anyway.
But that is who I am… kind of.
I’ve never been a fan of the label “Yogi” (or the label of “Christian” for that matter). Yet, I am a Believer and someone who has found tremendous richness in learning how to connect her movement to breath in a simple series of intentional postures.
When I discovered a teacher training that honored the rigor and insights of classical yoga and wasn’t afraid to bring a sincere faith in Jesus into the mix, I knew I found where I belong.
I don’t know what the future will bring (will I teach at yoga studio? a church? will I offer retreats?), but that is the beauty of following a dream one step at a time. You only need to go as far as the holy whispers lead you. You say yes to one invitation at a time. And then you wait for the next holy whisper and you trust that it will come.
I am well aware that not every Christian is comfortable with yoga, and not every yogi is pleased to see Jesus show up in a sun salutation. However, I am willing to enter into this tricky territory because I believe where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom and I feel the Spirit of the Lord with me here.
I tell this to you as encouragement for you too to be brave. Your dreams won’t always be met with cheers of validation from everyone in the room. Even the people closest to you won’t always initially understand the desires of your heart.
Since highschool and the quotes from Buddha I painted on my wall, I have had a deep love and appreciation for the wisdom that comes from the East. I value the practice of mindfulness, introspection, simplicity, and compassion. On my mat I have found these things, and from my mat they have gone on to help me bring perspective, patience and presence to the rest of my day.
I find my yoga practice especially helpful in motherhood.
Because perspective, patience and presence isn’t what naturally flows out of me when my Emma girl is throwing yogurt out of her bowl like a monkey, or when my seven year old son loses it over legos.
My yoga practice has also helped me refine my lens on true romance and meaningful adventure.
It has give me a joy for the process, not just the end result. It makes creating a vision board collage with my husband as valuable and almost as much fun as getting on an airplane together.
I’m looking forward with hopeful expectation for how the next part of this dream will unfold. Despite the conflict I might encounter with people who do not share my beliefs or opinions I am excited and full of joy to share what I have experienced on my mat and in my practice with those who also want to connect to Go and experience a life giving grace, peace and freedom. Because I know who I am and I know in whom I place my trust, I am not afraid to encounter a little resistance. Resistance often means we are on the right path.
Have a wonderful week. I hope you feel encouraged. I’ll be in high desert retreat land fulfilling a small dream of my own and praying for those of you who also have dreams that require your courage.
Go be brave and be who you are. Our little Romance & Adventure Community is excited to embrace you.
Grace & Peace to you! Morgan
